A Note On Our Dinner Theme:

The theme of this year’s dinner is to commemorate the 100 year tradition of honoring Irish-American airmail pilot William Blanchfield, who died in a freak plane accident while performing an ariel wreath drop for a fallen fellow pilot. A tradition began shortly thereafter of spreading shamrocks from Ireland sent from Ireland at his grave at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno on and around St. Patrick’s Day. The tradition was started by his mother and sustained by family members, the late undertaker Silas Ross, local historians and continues to this day by the Sons & Daughters of Erin in a memorial ceremony that includes a bagpiper and his family decedents in attendance. This year’s ceremony is scheduled the day after our dinner at noon, March 10 at his grave located in the Veteran’s  Section near the cemetery office.

The Sons & Daughters of Erin is Northern Nevada’s non-profit Irish heritage organization that hosts and sponsors Celtic events, celebrates Irish history and culture, participates in community events and donates to local charities.
