Why Owning a Small Business in Downtown Reno Still Makes Sense

I operate Greg’s Garage, an auto shop located in downtown Reno, where I have conducted business since 1991. This longstanding presence provides valuable insight into the area. My days begin early and end late, allowing me to observe the neighborhood at its most authentic moments. Downtown serves not only as my workplace but also as a hub for my customers—offering spaces for work, recreation, and community engagement.

The vibrancy of downtown is evident, especially during summer evenings when crowds gather at Aces Ballpark, generating activity that enhances the local atmosphere. These events draw people to the area, contributing to its dynamic culture. Just blocks away, 4th Street’s Brewery District has revitalized local corridors, with diverse restaurants and bars that add distinctive character and sustain activity beyond standard business hours.

Entertainment is a significant driver for the district, with casinos acting as anchors by attracting both residents and tourists through concerts, shows, gaming, and other events. Such activities increase foot traffic and provide opportunities for visitors to discover local businesses, which is essential for maintaining a thriving urban core.

Active engagement is also crucial. I participate in Downtown Reno Partnership committees and interact regularly with the broader community. The involvement of business owners in shaping downtown policy is vital to meaningful progress; collaboration leads to stronger, more sustainable outcomes than passive criticism.

Operating a small business in a city center presents challenges typical of urban environments. However, after more than thirty years in operation, my commitment remains rooted in the strength of the local community—the loyal clientele, neighboring businesses, and our shared belief in investing in downtown Reno’s continued growth.
